Was it the fact that Bertie was now learning something of magic from Maxim Horvath? Frowning in thought at this, Bertie inspected the tiny mouse in her hand for a moment before smiling slightly at Mrs. Brisby.
"Maybe," she agreed. "I don't know, though. After all...I'm not an expert on the subject. Though I am very fascinated now..."
And Mrs. Brisby did have a point. Given how Bertie herself had reacted moments ago, it was likely that most humans wouldn't believe it even if they were suddenly to be addressed by a talking animal. After all...most people didn't believe in magic, let alone the possibility of communication between various species. It would be difficult to convince others that talking animals did exist.
"Though really...I don't know what is so unusual about me."

“Oh, I didn’t mean that there was anything wrong with you,” said Mrs. Brisby hastily, certainly not wanting to offend the person who currently held her life, quite literally, in the palm of her hand, “I was just thinking out loud.” If only Jonathan was still around. His highly-developed intelligence would probably solve this mystery in a second! As she thought of her husband however, her mind also returned to their children, and the reality of her situation came back to her in a rush.
“I really don’t have the time to stop and talk about it though,” she said quickly, a hint of her former panic now finding its way back into her voice, “I need to get back home from here... not that I know where ‘here’ is.” She looked up at Bertie imploringly, hoping that she’d provide an answer to her unasked question.

"Oh," Bertie said with a look of mild confusion. "Well...here is New York City. I don't know where you're from, so I'm afraid I can't really help you to get back home. Do you know how you got here?"
It had never occurred to Bertie that the mouse might be lost. She just hadn't ever considered that animals could get lost at all. Her understanding was that all animals had an innate sense of direction, after all.
"Perhaps if I know, then I can help you."

“New York?” repeated Mrs. Brisby despairingly, biting one lip as she took another look at her surroundings, “I’ve never even heard of it.” She cast her mind back to the strange way she’d arrived here, however was unable to think of anything that could possibly have caused it. Still, she related the tale to the human, still hoping that she might of heard about a similar thing happening.
“And so you see,” concluded the mouse as she finished her tale, “I can’t just retrace my steps to get home, because I didn’t see them!”

"Oh..." Bertie said with a thoughtful frown. "That sounds rather like...magic to me."
She wondered for a moment if Mrs. Brisby would believe in magic, but then she laughed to herself at that thought. Only a few moments ago she hadn't believed that animals could talk. It wouldn't be hard to explain that such things as magic existed. And the way Horvath explained it, there was a scientific explanation behind magic.
"Where did you first appear?"

“Magic?” repeated Mrs. Brisby, frowning slightly as she considered the possibility, “I don’t claim to be an expert, but I do have some experience with that.” Well, technically she’d only used magic once in the past, but she felt this still counted. Unfortunately at the time none of the rats had been able to explain what had just happened, which meant that if magic was responsible here, then she may as well have had no experience at all.
“Just over there,” replied the mouse as Bertie asked where she’d first appeared. She turned and pointed towards the bank of the lake that she’d awoken on, thankful that a particularly distinctive rock allowed her to pick out the exact spot, even from this distance. “Although I was unconscious at the time; I could very well have appeared anywhere.”

Standing up slowly so as not to jostle her tiny passenger too much, Bertie walked over to the rock beside the water and arched a curious eyebrow. While she was not that well-practiced in magic, she was fairly certain that was what was at work here. Kneeling down, still moving slowly so that Mrs. Brisby wasn't thrown out of her hand, Bertie tried to examine the area.
Sadly, she could not see if there was anything out of the ordinary. As she was still learning magic, it wouldn't exactly be obvious to her if there were anything supernatural present.
"I'm afraid I can't see if anything strange is here," she admitted after a moment. "Perhaps if you tried wandering around this area, you could find whatever brought you here?"
