"On the contrary, I was given a leave of absence. My mortals will be well enough with a clan of gargoyles to keep an eye on them." Owen's voice was as dry as ever, and he raised one eyebrow slightly. "Since Oberon finally came to his senses, I decided to take some time to enjoy myself."
Puck flitted back to the form of Robin Goodfellow, idly glancing around the lab for anything else she could nab.

"I don't recommend you touching anything else," Maleficent said with a smirk. "I have everything protected by magic, so that no one by me can touch it. And as for Oberon coming to his senses, he still hasn't. Your precious lord is still as deluded as he was all those centuries ago when I left."
Dangerous ground, yes, but Maleficent didn't care. She was no longer an official part of Oberon's court, after all. The exile she had entered was of her own making, and she had ensured that there was no way that she would be dragged back to that dull court.

A dangerous red light flickered in the depths of Puck's green eyes, though with her back to Maleficent the other faerie wouldn't be able to see it. Maleficent played a dangerous game, insulting Oberon in front of Puck. As much of an arrogant jerk her Lord could be, she was still, above all, his creature. His Puck. His changeling.
His hobgoblin changeling.
"Oberon is not deluded," she said softly, forcing herself not to give in to a sudden temptation to shift and do something very un-Puck-like, namely claw Maleficent's face to ribbons. She was much happier with Oberon than usual since he'd lifted his ban on her, and therefore was feeling more loyal to her King than she had in many years.

"Of course not," Maleficent said with a wave of her hand. "Merely...arrogant." Sighing dramatically, Maleficent turned to face the Puck once more and crossed her arms in an imperious manner. "But who are we to quarrel about the values of dear Lord Oberon, really? I suppose we'll all just have to live with his...eccentricities."
Though the Faerie King really did have no sense of subtlety. That little escapade involving the Xanatos child, for instance. Of course, Maleficent was no one to point that out, as it would be hypocritical of her. And she had to admit...there was a certain style about Oberon's actions that did appeal to her more theatrical side.
"Though I must say," she added with a slight smirk. "I am curious as to what Oberon thought of your little charade as...oh, what is his name? The little stick in the mud."

Rather than give in to the lingering temptation to become the hobgoblin- it was amazing, really, how easy it was to consider using that tactic when she was being Robin Goodfellow- Puck let her form flicker into that of Owen Burnett again.
Of course, now that he was Owen again, he had to immediately stifle another urge too Puckish for Owen, namely waggle a playful eyebrow at Maleficent to rile her up again.
"Oberon was amused by my antics as Owen," Puck replied. And he had been, depending on your definition of 'amused'.

Maleficent didn't buy that for one minute, but if that was what made the Puck sleep well at night. Smirking a little at the Puck's human form--really, since when had Puck been able to make such an appealing form? All of the Puck's other forms were so annoying to look at--Maleficent continued to arch an eyebrow.
"Was he now?" she asked in mock surprise. "Now...that is odd, because what I heard was that he banished you for trying to avoid the Gathering to remain as this...Owen. Perhaps I was mistaken."

Oh yes. Maleficent definitely fancied Owen. Puck had to stifle a giggle at the very thought.
Why Puck, what a handsome form you've adopted.
All the better to tease you with my dear.
As Owen, Puck sniffed reprovingly. "Lord Oberon attempted to kidnap a child he had no right to," he corrected the other faerie. "I made my disapproval clear, and he took exception to the notion."

Kidnap a child? Perhaps Maleficent had been wrong about Oberon. But...no. He was still dull and deluded, after all. It was Oberon who had driven her out. Not himself, of course, but the politics surrounding him and the bans on certain brands of magic. And Puck had made his disapproval clear? And survived? It was a miracle that Maleficent wasn't dead yet herself.
"I see," she said with a wicked smirk. "Really, Puck, I'm amazed that you have not been killed yet by Oberon. His amusement with you can no doubt only go so far before he will grow tired of all your little tricks."
To say the least. Certainly Maleficent would have killed the Trickster long ago if she had thought she could get away with it. Handsome human form or no, he was annoying.

Owen became Robin again.
"Oberon at least has enough taste to appreciate my genius," she said haughtily. "I am, after all, what my Lord created me to be. And I am very good at it." She flapped a hand, as if growing bored with the conversation. In truth, she was. It was about time to go find someone else to play with.
Her gaze fell on a large, elaborately (and rather sinisterly) decorated spellbook, and her green eyes lit up. Perfect.
She darted forward, snatched up the book, winked at Maleficent, then vanished into Shadow, where not even Maleficent could find her.

Puck had moved too fast for Maleficent to stop him, but now she was good and mad. No...she was furious. That spell book was the one that she herself had written! Anyone who read it would know her secrets, and that was not something that Maleficent was about to accept. Still, she couldn't exactly follow Puck at this point. Shadow was the one place where Puck could hide completely, without being traced by any other Fae.
"I'll kill him," Maleficent snarled to herself. "I'll kill him."
