...A new face in the business. How...wonderful. Owen had not mentioned anything like this. When had this happened? Glowering a little at the strange man--Martin Horatio?--the Beast snorted loudly, taking this chance to get a good smell of the man. And the kitten on his shoulder.
That caused the Beast to pause for a moment. A...kitten? Why was there a kitten on this man's shoulder? It didn't make sense. Then again, the Beast's life hadn't made much sense since the curse was first placed upon him.
"I wasn't informed of this change in the business," he said gruffly, still on all fours.

"The turnover only just finished," Horvath said briskly. "Since you don't have many communications with the outside, I'm not surprised you haven't heard." He reached up and rubbed Anna's ear, having felt her shiver a little against him when the Beast sniffed at them.

The Beast snorted again and arched an eyebrow at this strange man. Most of the other humans who Owen sent here had to have their memories magically altered--Owen never said how, just that they did--because of how afraid they were. This man, however, didn't smell of fear. Confidence, though...that he had in abundance.
"Still," the Beast rumbled. "I should have received some warning from Xanatos."

So Xanatos was indeed involved. Typical. Horvath made a mental note to boost the defenses on his and Anna's apartments- for if Xanatos wanted them to get the book, he probably had a reason for it.
The sorcerer shrugged. "Mr. Xanatos has his own reasons for doing everything," he replied.

True enough, but that didn't mean that the Beast liked it. Far from it. Inwardly, he was growling out several curses upon Xanatos, his ancestors, and his descendants. Most of them in rather archaic French and involving various illnesses.
"I would still rather wait until I get some sort of confirmation of this," the Beast insisted. "I don't particularly like guests," he added, showing his fangs.

Well, that was annoying. Not something he would be unable to recover from, however.
Horvath hefted his walking stick into a more comfortable grip. The blue gem in its handle flickered hypnotically, reflecting in the Beast's eyes. "You have already received confirmation from Mr. Xanatos," he said smoothly, pushing a little on the creature's mind with his magic. "Everything is in perfect order."
While he laid the spell on the Beast, Horvath gave the shoulder Anna was riding on a slight twitch. If she jumped down now and went into the castle, the Beast wouldn't notice a thing.

Oh lovely. Well, she knew her cue. Anna jumped to the floor, slightly giddy by the fact that she could jump such a height safely. She slinked around the doorframe, careful to stay as far away from the Beast as possible. Her black form blended well into the shadows, and she stalked around the corner.
She would need to see which direction the Beast took Horvath in, so that she could go in the opposite direction. After all, the creature was unlikely to keep his secrets in the place where he took his guests.

For a moment, the Beast's mind resisted the spell. He certainly had not had any such confirmation...
But then the spell took hold and he shook his head dizzily. What had he been saying just now? Oh...yes. Turning to the man in front of him, the Beast nodded politely.
"Then...right this way," he grumbled, as that was the only way he really could speak. Leading his guest into the castle, he began making his way to what had once been his personal office.

Out of the corner of his eye, Horvath saw a black tail vanish down a corridor. Excellent. Anna would learn what they needed, he was certain of it. Now all he needed to do for her was keep the Beast distracted and listen in case she ran into trouble.
He trailed after the big creature, following him to an office that had once been rather nicely appointed, but age and the Beast's tempers had taken their toll. Horvath sat on a chair whose upholstery boasted several long gashes.

The Beast sat down opposite his guest, though it was rather uncomfortable for him to actually sit in a chair. His animal body wasn't built for bending this way. Still, he found that the few humans who he associated with found it a little more reassuring when he managed to have some human mannerisms.
"What exactly was it that you needed to know?"
