One of the tricks Horvath had learned was how to cloak his use of magic beneath a null-layer of energy. As he rolled his eyes in condescension, he allowed his gaze to go slightly out of focus and called up the magic within him, hiding it behind that null-layer to keep it from the faerie. He shaped the magic into a protective barrier that would make her spells slide of him with the ease a duck's feathers would shed water. Maleficent, he recalled, was fond of polymorph spells, and he had no intention of letting her turn him into a toad or raven or something.
Anna, he knew, would never let him live it down if he returned from this encounter wearing feathers.
Protections in place, Horvath refocused his eyes and smirked at the faerie. "I'll agree with you there, they are self-righteous old fools. Doesn't mean they don't think you're about as threatening as a kitten."

"A kitten?"
The anger was back in her tone as she glared at the man standing in front of her. Oh...she was so tempted to simply transfigure him and leave him in the streets. Let one of the many vehicles that traveled these streets squash him like the bug he was.
Her fingers clenched in fury as she pulled her hand away from him. No...If there was one thing that Maleficent enjoyed, it was making trouble. She had not had her hand in anything truly involved in the mortal world for so many centuries, but she had learned to live with this. Perhaps a little toying with this man would come in handy. It certainly would ease the boredom of centuries.
"You are a troublesome creature," she murmured.

"I have a knack for that," the sorcerer quipped, eyes glittering at the sight of Maleficent's anger. He was quite enjoying this. Just let her try to throw magic at him. "I've annoyed professionals, my dear. You're anything but."
Just a few more needles. Just because he could. He smirked broadly at her.

He was begging to be punished. Once more, the staff was in her hands rather than the smaller cane and she pointed the orb at his face.
"I despise troublesome creatures," she said with a sneer. "They always become far too high-maintenance."
Especially for someone like Maleficent. The little curse on the princess Aurora had been bad enough, especially with those three simpletons protecting her.
"Now...I suggest that you apologize before I do something you'll regret."

Horvath raised one eyebrow, redoubling his hidden protections. His cane rested on the ground to act as a grounding rod for any magic she might toss at him. All that sparring with Balthazar Blake had been good for something.
"One thing you should know about me, Maleficent," he said calmly, as if a half-mad faerie weren't pointing a magical weapon at his face. "I do not apologize."

"Very well," she said with a snarl.
Gathering up her magic, she sent out a shockwave of sickly green magic, wrapping around him and attempting to turn him into a toad. Not a raven, as that would be too dignified for him.
Nothing happened. He had protections up. Snarling even more, Maleficent lowered her staff and slammed the end into the ground, sending a small earthquake at the mortal man.
"You may have outwitted me once, but I never forget an insult."

Horvath braced himself, trying not to do anything so undignified as stagger in the wake of the earthquake. Maleficent's magic rolled off him in waves of green light, unable to find purchase on its target. He smirked at her.
"You're not difficult to outwit," he told her, and whipped his own cane around, sending a surge of pure force at the faerie.

Pure force that she easily deflected. "Now there you are mistaken, as you are clearly trying to out-muscle me now rather than use wits."
Smirking a little, she used her staff like a bat, sending a ball of fire at his head. Turning her back on him, she began walking away.
"Next time, I shan't be so lenient."

Child's play.
Quite literally. Horvath and Balthazar had played at throwing fireballs at one another when they were just boys, hundreds of years ago. He neatly wrapped the fireball up in a vacuum spell just as he had when he was seventeen, and the flames flickered out as the spell starved them of the oxygen they needed to keep burning.
"You're welcome to try for another time," he replied. With a slight smirk, he tipped his hat in her direction and strolled in the opposite direction, protections still raised.

Maleficent refused to be baited. She was far too above such a thing. That was what she told herself, at least. The anger and resentment were still there, and all she wanted to do was to simply strike him down where he stood. But the last thing that she needed right now was mortal police looking into her for assault.
With her back stiff as a rod, she swirled her staff through the air and with a burst of green flame, vanished from the streets, sending her body back to her hidden fortress within the Forbidden Mountain.
