Eugene was still not used to being welcomed in the halls of the palace. Only a short time ago, he was stealing from this very castle, after all. Still...as long as he was with Rapunzel, he was sure he could get used to this new life of his fairly quickly. Chuckling a little at that thought, Eugene began looking around for the little brunette princess in question.
Eventually, he found himself in the library and had to pause for a moment to look at the sheer number of books in here. "Wow," he muttered. Maybe he should have tried robbing this part of the castle instead of the crown. But, either way, he was pleased that he had gone after the crown. He wouldn't have met Rapunzel if he didn't.
"You in here, Blondie?" he called.
Maybe he shouldn't call her Blondie anymore, given the fact that she was no longer blonde, but for Eugene, she would forever be Blondie. It was just part of who she was.

Rapunzel had her nose in a book, as she often did these days. But she wasn't reading about history or royal policy; she currently held a prized copy of 1000 Ways to Use a Frying Pan. (The royal library had absolutely everything!)
But frying pans were forgotten at the sound of a familiar voice. "Eugene!" she squealed happily, dropping the book unceremoniously nd running towards him to throw her arms around his neck.
She was glad he'd come to see her, since she was usually the library's sole occupant, as her parents were even more busy than she was. It was only a bonus that she and Eugene were alone, because for reasons she didn't understand, sometimes her dad looked at her funny when she kissed Eugene in public.
She didn't know why because no one had ever told her that it was improper; she'd never known a man before and knew nothing about them or that there were rules for them. She only knew that he was her new dream, and that she was in love.
"I'm so happy to see you," she told him in a contented sigh, in case this had not already been made clear, as she snuggled closer against his chest.

Oh, she'd made it plenty clear, but Eugene still enjoyed hearing her say things like that to him. Unlike all those years when he'd been an unwanted thief and orphan, now he had someone who wanted him around just because. Smiling at this, he hugged her back and kissed her forehead.
Sure, he wasn't used to this whole being in love business, but Rapunzel made it so easy for him to just go with everything she threw at him. Partly because she was so adorable and innocent in everything, and partly because she was just as much in love with him as he was in love with her. Though there were always times when her wide-eyed innocence were...just a little bit of a problem.
"So what were you up to that was so much more fascinating than my company?" he teased, placing his hand under her chin and tilting her head back.

When his arms encircling her and his lips stamped to her forehead, Rapunzel closed her eyes for a moment in pleasure and just relished the fact that this was really happening. A few months ago, she'd never even known anyone other than Mother Gothel, and now she had... well, this.
"Learning 1000 Ways to Use a Frying Pan," she replied. "I seem to recall that they've beat you before." She smiled at him cheekily. She didn't have his quick wit, for the most part, but as she spent more time with him, she was becoming less of the naïve girl she had once been. He had taught her more about life and love than any book ever could.
Still, she could tease him back, but she was still sensitive and gullible at times, and she felt the need to clarify, as he tilted her face up towards his, "But nothing is better than spending time with you." (Even if she was proud of herself for taking out the kingdom's most wanted thief with a mere frying pan.) To prove it, she closed the remaining distance between them to press her lips to his gently.

Eugene made a face when she mentioned what exactly was her reading material of choice and rolled his eyes. "Why bother with that? That thing's already deadly in your hands."
Chuckling a little when she stood on tiptoe to kiss him, Eugene softly returned the kiss before pulling back, idly brushing a bit of hair away from Rapunzel's eyes. He honestly did find this haircut attractive for her. Sure, he wished he could have been a little neater with it, but she still looked very pretty.
"So...Frying pans and me. What more could a princess like you want?" he teased playfully. "Except for maybe a frog friend," he added, just to be safe in case Pascal was about. Eugene had already woken up far too many times with the chameleon's tongue in his ear.

With an innocent smile, Rapunzel reminded him, "Being knocked unconscious isn't the same thing as being dead." Her smile faded a little as she chose not to mention that he, of all people, should know that, since he had been both unconscious and dead. And both were her fault.
But she was easy to cheer up, because the feather-light feel of his fingers on her face as they brushed her hair away from her eyes and the gentle return of her kiss were a full reminder that even though he had been dead, he was fully alive now. She looked deeply into his eyes and gave him a little smile, not sure what else to do, not needing to do anything else.
Honestly... there was nothing else that she really wanted. She gave a long-suffering sigh, even though she was smiling. "Chameleon," she corrected him with feigned exasperation. Then she looked at him, thinking. Perhaps an engagement ring would be nice. "And a family," she finally said, looking at him seriously and squeezing him tighter. He had been an orphan, but he had a family now.

He didn't bother to respond to the comment about being dead. Yeah...he was not about to think about that anytime soon. Holding her a little tighter at that thought, Eugene sighed a little before he chuckled at her correction about what species Pascal really was.
"He's got a long tongue, he's a frog in my book," he said with a grin, holding her still closer.
And a family, she said. Smiling a little weakly at that, he looked down into her big green eyes. Yeah...he had to admit, that while he hadn't grown up with a family and had even claimed that he didn't want one, he had a family now in Rapunzel. Most people would get down on one knee and propose to Rapunzel right then, but Eugene knew that as much as he loved Rapunzel, she still needed a little time before she would be completely ready to be married. Still...Grinning down at her, he playfully tapped her chin with his knuckle.
"Yeah, a family," he said as light-heartedly as he could. "At least there aren't any little kids in this castle, or else I'd be pulling out my hair in frustration."

"So do you - are you a frog?" Rapunzel retorted. She only knew this because his tongue sometimes went in her mouth, and she wasn't sure why, but she liked it, except that Eugene always pulled away looking confused afterwards. And of course she was sure he wasn't a frog. "I could use a handsome prince, after all," she teased him.
She was kidding, of course; she didn't need a prince, she just needed him. And he could kid about it as much as he wanted, but they both knew it was true that they were here for each other. She was his family now, and she hoped that someday she was going to have a family with him. Their children would be the first raised in the castle for two generations, since she'd been kidnapped.
"Not yet," Rapunzel replied sweetly, batting her eyelashes at him a little. She wasn't entirely sure what happened to produce kids, but she knew something, more than he probably expected her to, anyway. After all, libraries had books on a lot more than just frying pans. She did know that you had to be married to have kids, and they weren't married yet, because Eugene just wasn't mature enough.

The comment about him being a frog took him by surprise for a moment, but Eugene quickly regained his composure, smirking a little at her. "Yeah...I'll have to keep on the look out for that handsome prince for you," he teased, playing with her short hair, a slightly rueful expression crossing his face at the sight of it. If only he'd been a little more careful with it...But he had to admit, that hair was just adorable on her.
Not yet? Did that mean she wanted kids? Did she even know how kids were made? His ears turned bright pink at that thought. He'd already had way too many awkward moments with Rapunzel's parents as they gave him a look silently demanding what his intentions towards their daughter were. Only honorable, but still...Eugene cleared his throat a little and glanced around nervously. Were her parents going to be leaping out at him if he wasn't careful?
"Well...kids won't be on my list of things to worry about for a while," he said breezily, trying to sound nonchalant. "Too much noise. And I should know," he added, making a face as he remembered those few years when he had been one of the older children responsible for helping take care of the toddlers at the orphanage.

She shook her head at him with a smile and roll of the eyes at his comment, loving the feel of his fingers in her hair. Granted it was a bit easier to get them out of there now than it would have been before, and she wondered if he thought she was beautiful, especially with such an odd cut – even though it was his doing, and done with good intent and all. Mother Gothel had certainly made her think otherwise.
“Are you hot, Eugene?” she asked, noticing the strange shade his ears and face were turning. It could not be told from the innocent expression on her face just what her thoughts were at that current moment as she looked at him suffering in awkwardness because of what she had said, whether she was purposefully making him uncomfortable or if it was done naïve of the repercussions.
She merely smiled at him. “I didn’t know you had a list of things to worry about,” she said, not realizing that he was probably being sarcastic. “I didn’t think thieves worried.” She snuggled against his chest and looked up at him, green eyes half-closed in contentment and adoration as she added, “But then, you’re not Flynn Rider anymore. You’re Eugene Fitzherbert. My Eugene.” She closed her eyes and inhaled his scent softly, holding him close.

Was he hot? He was tempted to respond flippantly that yes, yes he was, but he didn't as she continued on. Smiling softly as his blush began to disappear, he continued running his hand through her hair. Still as silky as the first time he had ever touched it, despite the difference in length.
"I have lots of things to worry about, Blondie," he finally said, wrapping one arm around her waist. "You, for one," he added with a soft kiss to her forehead. "Has anyone ever told you that you're just one big bundle of trouble waiting to happen?" he teased fondly. "And of course I'm your Eugene. Who else's would I be?"

Even though he didn’t have to worry about her now that she had an entire kingdom’s worth of guards looking after her to make sure that she didn’t get kidnapped a second time, Rapunzel decided not to point this out, since she quite enjoyed having Eugene as a bodyguard. Not the least of which was because she enjoyed the fact that he thought she was worthy of protecting.
There was also the advantage of being able to find him in private corridors for stolen kisses without anyone else watching. Of course she saw no reason why her parents shouldn’t trust him; she knew little of his past life, only how good that he had been to her, and she couldn’t understand why the king and queen wouldn’t trust her when it came to trusting him to keep her safe.
“This coming from you,” she retorted good-naturedly. She was a little more serious then, her hand stroking the ends of his hair at the nape of his neck absently as she murmured, “I don’t know.” She knew there were lots of girls he’d used his smolder on; had he climbed up their towers too? What did he see in her?

Blinking a little at the serious tone in her voice, Eugene softly ran a hand over her back, hoping to soothe her. Though he couldn't really guess what was making her so serious. He had to admit, though, he enjoyed the feeling of her hand on the base of his neck. With his hand still rubbing her back, Eugene sighed a little.
"I'll answer that for you," he said gently. "I wouldn't be anyone else's." He grinned in an attempt to lessen the suddenly serious mood. "No one else is good enough for me. You can't beat a princess." His fingers slid through her hair again. "That and I have a thing for pretty green-eyed brunettes with short hair."

What if he was just with her because she was a princess and he thought that he could get something out of her? What if he knew other girls with brown hair and green eyes who were prettier and smarter and more interesting than she was? The sudden rush of self-consciousness made her swallow hard. No, she said to herself, suddenly, and did not realize until a moment later that she had said it out loud.
Gothel was dead. She would not be tortured by her anymore. “Sorry,” she said sheepishly, giving him a weak little smile. “I just… sometimes I guess this all seems too good to be true, you know?” She sighed, enjoying the feel of him against her, his hand in her hair. “It just all happened so fast… Maybe I just never gave myself time to sit down and let it sink in…” But it was moments like these, just standing with him and enjoying his company, that she started to.

Eugene gave her a concerned look as she firmly said no for no apparent reason. Frowning a little, he tilted her head back slightly so that he could better look at her. What was wrong with her? Even her assurance that she was all right wasn't enough to make him feel much better.
"Right," he said quietly, though he knew what part of it probably was. Gothel. It was always that old witch's fault. Frowning at this, he hugged her tighter and kissed the top of her head. "You know you don't have to worry about me going any where, right Blondie?" he asked her softly. "Why would I leave my new dream behind?"
